Audra: Not only is this statement false, but sex is determined at conception, not “earlier in a pregnancy”. The woman has only X chromosome eggs, while men have sperm which are either X or Y. If the sperm is an X, then it’s gonna be a girl, if it’s a Y when the egg is fertilized (when conception occurs), it’s gonna be a boy….
Elizabeth: I’m no scientist, but even though the sex is determined at conception, that doesn’t mean unique sexual development occurs prior to the 3 months into pregnancy. The statement is still false, but it could hold some truth if you consider what it means, not necessarily what it’s saying.
The sexual organs are the same until later in pregnancy. There is a small sack and a small “penis tip”. The sack either grows larger along with the penis tip and becomes males genitals, or the sack splits to become the vulva and the penis tip stays small becoming the clitoris. It’s why women have more orgasms from clitoral stimulation, they’re basically rubbing their penis tips.
This explanation has always failed because it does not actually even attempt an answer; it simply regresses the question to an earlier place and time. The real problem, however, may be that the question itself is flawed. A better question than “why do men have nipples?” (because men are mammals and mammals have nipples) might be “why DON’T males have BREASTS?”. One possible answer (besides the obvious lack of hormonal triggers), is that in proto-mammal, they DID, and that both male and female progenitors provided nutrients to offspring, until further division of labor led to vestigiation. I cannot think of a reliable way to collect evidence for this hypothesis. Maybe if we find fossilized adult males in burrows with younglings, that would work… but would we ever realize they’re male?
A related question is “why do only mature HUMAN females have”, as zoologists say, “great honking gazongas”? A likely answer seems to be that they’re ornamental signal devices. Stabs at the specific psychological mechanism are occasionally forwarded, but have never proven to be particularly revelatory. Why do birds like crests? Because they’re birds… and we’re humans.
I think what’s best about these comments is that a) we’re arguing over the INTERNET, b) we’re arguing about when the sex of babies is determined, something anyone can just google or something and c) none of the comments are actually about the picture.
Thanks for clearing that up, everybody (meaning those who posted comments explaining it). That is really helpful to finally know (or at least think I know).
well. what to say.
this site is great!
Ahhhh! That explains it!
I was wondering about those…
This is hilarious! The creators of MLIA strike again!
This statement is false. Sex is determined much earlier in a pregnancy.

Gotta love internet arguments.

sex is determined upon conception. however, the genitals do not develop until later.

Er, so should I stop playing with my man nipples?
It’s true, of course, after three months or so, you have to be very determined to have sex.

i always wondered.
ARGH! who cares? its funny and unrelated! chill!

rofl
@ Napoleon: My comment is about the picture AND the caption!
wtf are nuns doing playing the the water and worrying about nipples?!
HAHA(: this is too funny…
I’ve heard the sex of a baby is determined at 3 weeks. During that time, the embryo is still deciding whether or not to accept the Y chromosome.
Nuns have nipples
I find this very stimulating.
This is way better than teaching my dog how to skank.
woohoo this is most interesting, Dancing nuns and nipples
